Real Betis made a winning start to their La Liga campaign, edging past Real Sociedad 1-0 at home.

The decisive moment arrived in the 63rd minute. Colombian forward Cucho Hernández produced a clever pass towards the edge of the penalty area, where Rodrigo Riquelme met the ball first time and fired it into the net to give Betis the lead.

The hosts had chances to put the result beyond doubt. Isco came close to doubling the advantage after another well-weighted pass from Hernández, but Real Sociedad goalkeeper Álex Remiro reacted sharply to keep his side in the game.

The visitors pushed for an equaliser late on and came agonisingly close. Betis were rescued by the woodwork before goalkeeper Álvaro Valles produced another important intervention to preserve the clean sheet.
