First silverware of the season: PSG claim 2026 UEFA Super Cup glory

Paris Saint-Germain continue to collect European silverware at an unprecedented rate. Just as they did twelve months ago, the Parisian giants have followed up their Champions League triumph by lifting the UEFA Super Cup.

Perceptions of this curtain-raising fixture often remain divided. On one hand, it represents a prestigious opportunity to add another trophy to the club's cabinet—a prospect particularly attractive for Aston Villa, whose cabinet boasts far fewer European honours. On the other, the recently concluded World Cup casts a long shadow, with several key international stars having only recently returned from their post-tournament breaks. Naturally, these varying levels of match fitness serve as a great leveller, rendering the outcome inherently unpredictable.

Indeed, for long spells in Salzburg tonight, Unai Emery's side looked capable of pulling off a major upset by capitalizing on their superior physical conditioning.

The first half proved an entertaining, high-tempo affair as both sets of players displayed plenty of early-season energy. PSG broke the deadlock in the 20th minute when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia gathered possession inside the penalty box, shifted the ball onto his favored right foot, and unleashed a thunderous strike into the roof of the net past Marco Bizot, who was deputizing for the absent Emiliano Martínez.

Aston Villa responded admirably, seizing the initiative and carving out several promising openings in the PSG half. Central to their attacking threat was Brian Madjo; at 17 years and 212 days old, the teenage forward became the youngest player ever to appear in a UEFA Super Cup. However, he ensured his name would be remembered for more than just the record. Shortly before the interval, Madjo outmuscled his marker to meet a precise John McGinn cross from the right flank, powering a header past the goalkeeper to level the score at 1-1—a reward that fully reflected Villa's first-half output.

Luis Enrique made a tactical adjustment at the interval, introducing Ousmane Dembélé to inject directness into the PSG attack. Nevertheless, Villa controlled the opening exchanges of the second period. Emery's men might well have capitalized on their momentum had it not been for a costly positional error from Matty Cash, who played the opposition onside. Désiré Doué exploited the lapse, latching onto a through ball before coolly restoring the French champions' lead.

Unlike the first half, Villa found no route back into the contest. A succession of second-half substitutions—most notably the withdrawal of McGinn, who had been the driving force in their midfield—diminished their intensity. Consequently, a far-from-vintage Paris Saint-Germain managed the closing stages with relative comfort to secure the trophy. The new European season is barely underway, yet the Parisians already have their first piece of silverware in the cabinet.
