Italian football is in mourning following the death of legendary AC Milan and Italy captain Franco Baresi, who passed away at the age of 66 after a prolonged illness. Widely regarded as one of the greatest defenders in football history, Baresi leaves behind an extraordinary legacy that shaped generations of players and defined an era of Italian football.

A one-club icon, Franco Baresi spent his entire professional career at AC Milan, winning six Serie A titles and lifting the European Cup/UEFA Champions League on three occasions. On the international stage, he was part of Italy's victorious 1982 FIFA World Cup squad and later captained the Azzurri to the 1994 FIFA World Cup final. Although many remember the heartbreak of his missed penalty in the shootout against Brazil, that moment never overshadowed a career built on leadership, loyalty and defensive brilliance.

AC Milan paid an emotional tribute to their former captain, describing him as a symbol of the club whose influence will endure forever.

"Captain, you will remain with us forever. Italian and world football mourn your passing, and AC Milan says farewell to one of its greatest icons. A life defined by unwavering loyalty came to an end after a courageous battle with illness, one that Franco faced with remarkable dignity and strength. Today we say goodbye to one of the greatest defenders of all time, a man respected not only by teammates but also by his fiercest rivals," the club said in an official statement.
