Paris Saint-Germain have suffered a significant defeat off the pitch

Paris Saint-Germain have suffered a significant defeat off the pitch after a French court ruled in favour of their former star forward Kylian Mbappé, ordering the club to pay him €60 million following a long-running contractual dispute.

The France captain had originally filed a claim worth €263 million, citing unpaid wages, bonuses and what his legal team described as improper treatment by the club during the final months of his contract. While the court stopped well short of that figure, it did find PSG at fault on multiple counts.

According to the ruling, Paris Saint-Germain failed to pay Mbappé’s salary for three months — from April to June 2024 — as well as outstanding performance-related bonuses and a signing-on fee stipulated in his contract. Those breaches formed the basis of the €60m compensation award.

“We are satisfied with this decision. It was the expected outcome given that salaries were not paid,” said Mbappé’s lawyer, Frédéric Casserreau, following the verdict.

The legal battle may not be over yet. In response, PSG have lodged a counterclaim against the World Cup winner, demanding €240 million in damages. The club argues it suffered major financial losses after Mbappé blocked a proposed transfer to Saudi giants Al Hilal in 2023.
