Czech Republic sack head coach Ivan Hašek after shock Faroe Islands defeat
Ivan Hašek has been dismissed as head coach of the Czech Republic national team following the team’s humiliating 2-1 loss to the Faroe Islands in FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifying — a result that all but ended their hopes of direct qualification for the 2026 tournament.
The Czech FA confirmed the decision on Tuesday, citing the magnitude of the defeat and the public backlash it triggered. Despite the setback, the Czechs remain in contention for a play-off spot, sitting one point ahead of the Faroes with one game left to play — away to Gibraltar.
The 62-year-old Hašek had been in charge since January 2024. During his tenure, the team played 21 matches, recording 11 wins, 5 draws and 5 defeats. Under his leadership, the Czech Republic also won their UEFA Nations League group last year.
The Czech FA is expected to announce an interim replacement in the coming days as the team looks to regroup ahead of the decisive final qualifier.
