PSG Squad for UEFA Super Cup: Zabarnyi Left Out, Safonov Included
Paris Saint-Germain have announced their squad for the upcoming UEFA Super CupTottenham Hotspur, set to be played on August 13 in Udine, Italy. Notably absent from the matchday list is newly-signed defender Illya Zabarnyi, despite having joined the team officially earlier this week.
Though left out of the official squad, the Ukrainian international has traveled to Italy with the rest of the team — suggesting that his integration into the squad is only a matter of time, possibly delayed due to registration or fitness reasons.
Another significant omission is Gianluigi Donnarumma, further fueling speculation that the Italian goalkeeper is on his way out of the club during the current transfer window.
In a surprising twist, Russian goalkeeper Matvei Safonov has been included in the squad. This comes despite reports that one of the informal conditions surrounding Zabarnyi’s transfer to PSG was the expected departure of Safonov. For now, however, the 25-year-old remains in Paris and is eligible to play in the Super Cup.
Meanwhile, new signing Lucas Chevalier is expected to start in goal as the club’s first-choice keeper moving forward. The 22-year-old Frenchman, signed earlier this summer, is seen as a long-term solution between the sticks for Luis Enrique’s side.
