Javier Aguirre's Tactical Return Pays Off

Mexico edged past bitter rivals USA with a dramatic 2-1 victory in the CONCACAF Gold Cup final at NRG Stadium in Houston, securing their record-extending 10th title in the tournament’s history.

The match got off to a lightning start as Chris Richards opened the scoring for the United States in just the 4th minute, heading home from a set-piece to give the Americans an early advantage.

But El Tri responded with authority. In the 27th minute, veteran striker Raúl Jiménez brought Mexico level, capitalizing on a defensive lapse to slot the ball past the keeper and swing momentum back in Mexico’s favour.

The decisive moment came in the 78th minute when midfielder Edson Álvarez rose highest to head in a goal from a well-worked free-kick. The goal was initially ruled out for offside, but after a VAR check, it was confirmed—sparking wild celebrations among the Mexican fans.

Javier Aguirre's Tactical Return Pays Off

Back for his third spell as head coach, Javier Aguirre showed his experience on the touchline, guiding Mexico with composure and clarity. His tactical changes in the second half, including a string of smart substitutions, helped El Tri maintain control and resist the late American surge.

Patrick Agyemang came close to forcing extra time with a dangerous chance in the dying moments, but Mexico’s defence held firm under pressure, closing out a well-earned and emotionally charged victory.
