Paraguay Stun Uruguay in Montevideo to Move One Step Closer to FIFA World Cup 2026
Paraguay have taken a massive step toward qualifying for the FIFA World Cup 2026 after defeating Uruguay 2–0 in Montevideo — their first away win over La Celeste in 12 matches.
Matías Galarza opened the scoring early with a powerful header, giving the visitors the perfect start. The win was sealed in the 81st minute when Julio Enciso calmly converted a penalty to cap off a historic night for Paraguayan football.
Under head coach Gustavo Alfaro, Paraguay have gone on a remarkable run. Prior to his appointment, the team was languishing outside the automatic qualification spots in South America. But nine games unbeaten have propelled them to second place in the CONMEBOL standings — bringing them within touching distance of their first World Cup appearance since 2010.
