Lewandowski Equals Ronaldo's Champions League Record
Robert Lewandowski has once again etched his name into the history books by matching a prestigious record previously held solely by Cristiano Ronaldo in the UEFA Champions League.
During Barcelona's thrilling 5-4 away victory over Benfica in the seventh round of the group stage, the Polish striker netted a brace, both goals coming from the penalty spot. According to Opta Sport, these goals took Lewandowski’s tally to 19 successful penalty conversions in the Champions League, equaling the record set by Portuguese superstar Ronaldo.
Sitting just behind them on the all-time list is Argentine legend Lionel Messi, who has converted 18 penalties in the competition.
With both Ronaldo and Messi now playing outside of Europe—Ronaldo in Saudi Arabia and Messi in the United States—Lewandowski stands as the sole active contender in the Champions League to extend this record further in the near future.
