Lionel Scaloni: "I’m Here to Support the Players"
Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has addressed his team’s 2-1 loss to Paraguay in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, offering his perspective on the defeat.
"I’m not here to criticize the players. My role is to support them," Scaloni said post-match. "We knew this game would be difficult. Our goal is to keep improving and help our younger players gain confidence."
Reflecting on the match, Scaloni noted Argentina’s strong start but acknowledged that Paraguay’s early second-half goal shifted the momentum. "We played well in the first half, but conceding at the start of the second complicated things. Credit to Paraguay; they defended exceptionally."
Despite the loss, Scaloni remains optimistic. "We aim to get back on track. The team always gives 100%, always tries their best. We’ll analyze this game and see where we can improve," he added.
Argentina Still Tops South American Qualifying Table
Argentina continues to lead the South American qualification standings with 22 points, three ahead of second-placed Colombia. Scaloni’s focus now turns to ensuring his team maintains their form as they push toward securing their spot in the 2026 World Cup.
