The legendary forward confessed he’s not yet certain whether he’ll take part in what would be his sixth tournament appearance

Lionel Messi has left the door open — but not fully ajar — when it comes to representing Argentina at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The legendary forward, who led his nation to World Cup glory in Qatar, confessed he’s not yet certain whether he’ll take part in what would be his sixth tournament appearance.

The Inter Miami star shared a candid reflection on where he stands physically and mentally as the 2026 tournament edges closer:

“Day by day, I try to feel good and, above all, be honest with myself. When I feel good, I enjoy it. But when I don’t — honestly, I don’t enjoy it. And if that’s the case, then I’d rather not be there.

We’ll see. I haven’t made a decision about the World Cup yet. I’ll finish this season match by match, then we’ll have pre-season, and six months from now, I’ll see how I feel. Hopefully I can finish the MLS season strongly and prepare well for 2026 — then I’ll decide.”

The remarks come amid growing speculation that Messi’s era with the Argentina national team is slowly drawing to a close. Just yesterday, the 36-year-old delivered an emotional wave to fans following Argentina’s win over Venezuela — in what many believe was his final appearance in front of home fans wearing the Albiceleste shirt.
