The number of matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup will increase significantly. According to the New York Times, FIFA is leaning towards abandoning the usual format of the group stage with four teams in each group. Given that the number of participants will increase from 32 to 48, two teams from each group (24) will advance to the next round, plus the eight best teams who take the third places.

As a result, the extra round of the playoffs will increase the champion's path - to win the title, now it will be necessary to play eight matches instead of seven. A total of 104 matches are scheduled.

The 2026 World Cup will last 39 days, and the final will take place on Sunday, July 19, 2026.

It was previously reported that World Cup 2026 will be held in 16 cities in the US, Canada and Mexico.
